Molepolole station commander Benedict Matlho is concerned by the escalating number of defilement cases. Speaking in an interview, Matlho said since the defilement age was increased from 16 years to 18 years, the District has experienced a sharp increase.
He noted that both genders are victims as boys also get defiled. Matlho said the boys are in most cases defiled by girls in the same age bracket and rarely older women.
“The law says if the act is between a minor who is 4 years older or less than the victim, there is no prosecution, however, we open a case and investigate then forward to DPP for assessment of evidence. DPP is the one which makes that decision. ” He added that it is not often easy to withdraw a defilement case as the law protects minors.
He warned parents against leaving their children unattended or with strangers.
