Chief Magistrate Gaseitsiwe Tonoki denied cold blooded murder accused Tshepiso Letsididi bail.Tonoki noted that the accused has 3 offences of murder, 2 counts of rape and robbery.
The accused argued that he remains innocent until proven guilty and therefore his right to liberty should be respected.
In denying him bail, Magistrate Tonoki noted that the state had vehemently opposed the bail application. The state opppsed his bail application because he has a similar offence of murder and rape before Lobatse High Court due for trial in November, a rape charge in Molepolole Magistrate Court and present one of double murder and robbery committed in Magokotswane ward in Molepolole.
The state said there is tangiable fear that accused may be the main actor in more criminal activities should he be granted bail. “Murder comes with a maximum sentence of death penalty, it is indeed a severe punishment which may induce a person to abscond.” The state argued.
In addition, the court learnt that accused had previously absconded in his matter before Lobatse High Court and an arrest warrant was issued hence he is not a candidate for bail. He will mention again on 20 March 2023.
