MAHOKOTSWANE RESIDENTS UNITE TO COMBAT CRIME

In an effort to reduce crime in Magokotswane ward in Molepolole, residents formed the Kweneng Sereto Neighborhood Watch group to work hand in hand with the police. The Neighborhood watch was officially launched this past Saturday at Magokotswane Ward.

Speaking at the launch, the Chairperson of the Neighborhood Watch group, Mr Sebilo Motlhaping indicated that the this group was formed after there was increase in house break-ins and theft in the area. The Chairperson indicated that these crimes are mainly committed by the youth within the area which is worrisome. “Our intention is to Patrol across the area leaving no area unattended so that we can fight the escalation of crime in this area.” He said.

Also at the event, Kgosi Rankokwane of Mahokotswane, said that since the Neighborhood watch group is formed, crime will be reduced and they will now be able to sleep in peace. He said use of illegal drugs like Katse have increased amongst the youth in the area and there is a lot of  littering which he hopes that the commitee will be able to help the police address these issues.

The councillor of Mahokotswane, Mr Andrew Selwe, stated that the Neighborhood watch committee came at the right time especially since the area has had new developments like the Village Gate mall. He said that whenever a place has new infrastructural developments crime tends to increase which is what is happening in Mogokotswane. The councillor also pleaded with  businesses within the area to support the commitee by providing funds to buy necessary equipments like whistles  and reflectors so that the commitee can be more effective.

The Deputy Station Commander of Molepolole Police Station, Assistant Superintendent Motshwari Mokamogo, applauded the Mahokotswane residents for forming a neighborhood watch group, stating that teamwork is core in fighting crime. He urged the group to ensure that they work hand in hand with the police in order to remain effective. He added that  crimes like house break-ins and use of drugs in Molepolole have continued to grow since 2020 hence the need for Neighborhood watch as it  will ease the police’s work in fighting  crime.

The area member of parliament, Mr Oabile Regoeng also commended the commitee indicating it shows that they are committed to fight against crime in their area. He also said that Neighborhood Watch Committees have always helped the police in fighting crime which is why it is very important for Batswana to be involved in such commitees.

For his part, Mr Lesego Basenyi, who is the acting patrol coordinator of Motswasele Ward Neighborhood Watch Commitee, which is well-known for attaining  zero percent crime rate in their ward adviced the new committee to be very discreet in their Patrols and inform only the police in order to be effective in their patrols. He said that this has always worked in their favour in attaining zero percent crime rate. Lastly Mr Basenyi  adviced the members of the public to continue forming Neighborhood Watch Committees as they play a major role in fighting crime.
