Psychiatric Nurse at Scotish Livingstone Hospital Mr Kealeboga Moatshe has urged parents to take the lead in the fight against drug use by young people.Mr Moatshe said this on Saturday during the 10km walk against drug abuse and illicit trafficking organized by DRUG FREE IS THE NEW COOL ORGANIZATION in Molepolole.
Mr Moatshe also called for action from parents,law enforcement and other stakeholders to fight drug use by young people. He mention that in most cases it is parents who give the young ones drugs to sell even in schools.
He further pleaded with the community to report such incidents with the police, stating that without the help of the community police efforts to fight drug abuse will be in vain. “In most cases when we talk about drug abuse, we forget about the excessive alcohol consumption but they go in line”, said Moatshe.
Mr Moatshe also added that the number of young people admitted on drug abuse related ailments is a concern as it surpas that of mental health cases and mostly involves young people of 12 to 23 years.
For his part, Kgosi Sesupo Gabonthone encouraged young people to train and discipline themselves to resist from ways that are damaging their lives. He also mentioned that parents should monitor their children and work with bogosi to fight drug abuse.
Amongst the attendees for the walk was Molepolole North Member of Parliament, Honourable Oabile Regoeng, Founder of Botswana Youth Awards and Re mmogo Youth Organization, Mr Kagiso Morebodi, Kweneng District Council Deputy Chairperson, Honourable Slumber Mokgosi, KRDA Chairperson Mr Shima Monageng and variours social clubs (Sepoko Rangers, Dikopane, Letlapa,Bonatla and Bakwena Taxi Services).
The Coordinator of Drug Free Is The New Organization Mr Aupa Koosaletse applauded all the organizing committee and social teams. He also added that they have organized a drug free tournament which they will announce very soon.
